Three Mile Creek is one of the most talked-about waterways in Mobile, and if you live in its watershed you’ve probably wondered how much of your wet-yard trouble traces back to it. The honest answer is: some, sometimes — but usually less than people assume. Here’s what the data actually supports.

Three Mile Creek in Brief

Three Mile Creek runs about 14 miles through Mobile as a tidally influenced urban stream, draining a large, heavily developed area on its way toward the Mobile River (Mobile Bay National Estuary Program). “Tidally influenced” matters: the lower creek rises and falls with the bay, so during a heavy rain at high tide, stormwater has a harder time getting out. Decades of development in the watershed added pavement and rooftops that shed water fast, which is why runoff and flooding have been persistent issues along it.

What the Gauge Actually Tells You

If you want real numbers on the creek, there is exactly one good source: the USGS streamgage “Threemile Creek at Fillingim Street at Mobile, AL” (site 0247101475). It has recorded gage height — the creek’s water level — at regular intervals since 2000, and it’s the only gauge among Mobile’s urban creeks with a usable long-term, real-time record. (Dog River has only a NOAA tidal water-level station, 8735391, and Halls Mill Creek has no active gauge at all.)

Two honest limits on that data, stated plainly per how we handle every figure on this site — with its source and its method:

  • It measures height, not risk. The USGS gauge tells you how high the creek is right now and how high it’s been. It does not come with an official NWS flood stage, because the Weather Service doesn’t forecast small urban creeks the way it does big rivers. So there’s no published “flood begins at X feet” line for Three Mile Creek.
  • It’s a monitor, not a prediction. Watching the gauge can tell you the creek is rising; it can’t tell you your yard will flood, and we don’t make that call for you. Anyone promising a creek-based flood prediction for your specific address is overstating what the data can do.

Used for what it is — a live look at the creek’s level — the Fillingim Street gauge is genuinely useful. Used as a forecast, it’s the wrong tool.

You can check it yourself: USGS publishes the Fillingim Street station on its National Water Information System (waterdata.usgs.gov), refreshed through the day, so during a wet stretch you can see whether the creek is running high or holding steady. If you’re in the lower, tidal reaches nearer the bay, the NOAA tide station at the Dog River Bridge (station 8735391) is the closest read on how much the tide is backing water up. Neither replaces watching the forecast, but together they give you the kind of real-time picture a big river’s flood forecast would — you just have to read the level yourself rather than be handed a warning.

Why Three Mile Creek Floods

The creek floods for the reasons most urban Gulf Coast streams do: a lot of hard surface sheds rain fast, the channel is tidal at the bottom, and the region gets big rain events. When a heavy storm lands on a full tide, the water backs up. Those same downpours strain the sanitary system, too — after the storms of May 2025, MAWSS reported an overflow of more than 181,000 gallons of wastewater across several sites, with Three Mile Creek among the receiving waters (per MAWSS, May 2025). It’s a reminder that in a big rain the creek is carrying more than stormwater.

None of this is a reason for fear-bait. It’s the normal behavior of a low-lying, tidal, urban watershed — and it’s exactly why both the public system and your private yard need to be able to move water.

The City’s Work on the Creek

Three Mile Creek has drawn real public investment, and it’s fair to give the city credit for it. Mobile has funded dredging of the historic creek channel and broader restoration, and the creek is the subject of a comprehensive watershed-management effort aimed at reducing flooding and improving its health (Mobile Bay National Estuary Program; City of Mobile). In early 2026 the City Council approved a round of drainage resolutions funding vegetation and debris removal plus stormwater-drainage improvements across several districts — including drainage work on Springhill Avenue near Three Mile Creek and channel improvements running from Mobile Street toward the creek. None of it is glamorous and none of it happens overnight, but it’s steady money going into the public network the whole watershed leans on.

Public Creek, Private Yard

Here’s the line that matters for a homeowner. The creek itself, and the ditches and storm drains that feed it, are public — the City of Mobile’s Storm Water Management program runs and maintains that network, as the work above shows. That’s real public money going into the public side of the problem.

But that work stops at the right-of-way. The water standing in your yard — pooling on your lawn, pressing against your slab, lingering for days after the rain — is private-side, and moving it is on you. The city dredging a creek channel a mile away does nothing for the low corner of your back yard. That’s not a complaint about the city; it’s just where the responsibility line falls, and it’s why private drainage exists.

If You Live Near the Creek

If you’re in the Three Mile Creek watershed, separate two different problems. Storm and tidal flooding — the creek coming up in a major event — is a flood-zone and flood-insurance question, and no private drainage system stops a creek in full flood. Everyday standing water — the wet yard, the soggy lawn, the water at the foundation between storms — is a drainage question, and that one you can solve.

Common questions

Is there a flood forecast for Three Mile Creek?

Not an official one. The National Weather Service publishes forecast flood stages for large rivers, but not for a small urban creek like Three Mile Creek. There's a USGS gauge that records the creek's height in real time, which is useful for watching conditions, but it isn't a forecast and no published flood stage is attached to it.

Does living near Three Mile Creek mean my yard will flood?

Not necessarily. Proximity to the creek raises your exposure to storm and tidal flooding, but everyday yard sogginess is usually about your soil and grade, not the creek itself. A lot near the creek on well-drained ground can stay dry while a low, poorly drained lot blocks away stays wet all winter.

Who is responsible for Three Mile Creek flooding?

The creek and the public storm-drain network are the City of Mobile's responsibility (its Storm Water Management program), and the city has funded dredging, restoration, and district drainage work on it. Your own yard, though, is private-side — the water that collects on your property is yours to manage.

Can drainage protect my yard from Three Mile Creek?
