If your Mobile yard holds water long after the last storm has passed, it’s worth understanding why, because the cause decides the fix. A yard that’s wet from a high water table needs a different solution than one that’s wet from runoff, and getting that wrong is how people pay to dig a drain that doesn’t work.

The Real Reason: A Winter Water Table

A water table is simply the level below which the ground is saturated with water. In much of Mobile County that level is not far down. On the low, flat, poorly drained soils, it rises to within 12 inches of the surface from December through April (USDA-NRCS). For those months your lawn is essentially sitting on top of a sponge that’s already full.

That changes everything about how rain behaves. On a well-drained lot, rain soaks in and keeps moving down. On a saturated lot, there’s nowhere for it to go — the ground below is already at capacity — so it pools on the surface and lingers. The yard doesn’t dry out between storms because the problem isn’t really the last storm; it’s the water table underneath, and that stays high until the season turns.

The Soil Under Your Grass

Mobile sits on low-relief, deeply weathered coastal ground (Geological Survey of Alabama). The soils that give people trouble — the Smithton series and its wet-flat neighbors — are sandy loam on top, over a clay-enriched subsoil that perches water. Rain moves easily through the loose sandy surface, then slows dramatically when it hits the tighter subsoil beneath. Water stacks up on that boundary, and on a flat lot with a high water table it has no sideways escape either.

This is where the local “red clay” idea comes from — and it’s worth correcting, because it sends people toward the wrong fix. The reddish subsoil in parts of the county (the Bama and Malbis soils, for example) is real, but its texture is sandy clay loam, not solid clay. The yard isn’t a clay bathtub; it’s a sandy surface over a slow subsoil, sitting on a high water table. That distinction matters: you’re not trying to break through a clay pan, you’re trying to intercept and reroute shallow groundwater.

Why Winter, Not Summer

Here’s the counterintuitive part. Mobile is a wet place — about 67 inches of rain a year (NOAA/NCEI 1991–2020 normal) — and the heaviest rain falls in summer, with July the wettest month at nearly 7.7 inches on average. So you’d expect summer to be the soggy season.

It usually isn’t, for the wet-flat yards. Summer heat drives heavy evaporation and plant uptake, and the water table sits lower, so even big thunderstorms drain off relatively fast. Winter flips that: cooler temperatures, dormant plants, less evaporation, and a water table riding near the surface. The rain totals are lower, but the ground can’t shed what it gets. That’s why the classic Mobile complaint is a yard that’s a swamp from Christmas through Easter and fine by the Fourth of July. If your wet season is winter, you’re almost certainly looking at a water-table problem, not a rainfall one.

It’s Not the Whole County

One honest and important limit: this is not a countywide condition, and any contractor who tells you every Mobile yard floods is overselling. Mobile County’s single most common soils are actually well-drained sandy uplands — chiefly the Wadley series — not the wet flats (USDA-NRCS soil data).

Where you sit decides your problem:

  • Wet-flat soils dominate the low ground: much of the city and its midtown flats, Prichard, Saraland, and the creek-side bottoms around Theodore. These are the water-table yards.
  • Sandy uplands cover much of West Mobile, Semmes, and Tillmans Corner. These drain freely; when they hold water, it’s usually a surface issue — a flat spot, a downspout, runoff from a higher lot — not a water table.

How to Tell If Yours Is a Water-Table Yard

You don’t need a soil scientist to make a good first guess. Water-table yards tend to share a specific set of signs, and they look different from a simple runoff problem:

  • The timing is seasonal. It’s wet through the cool months — roughly December to April — and noticeably better in summer, even though summer rains harder. Runoff yards, by contrast, flood during a storm and drain soon after, any time of year.
  • The ground stays spongy, not just puddled. Step on it and it squishes; a footprint fills with water. That’s saturated soil, not surface pooling. Puddles that sit in one obvious low spot and drain once the sun comes out point more to grading.
  • It’s slow to recover. A water-table yard is still soft days after the rain stops, because the problem underneath hasn’t changed. A quick-drying yard rarely has a water-table issue.
  • Wetland plants move in. Moss, sedges, rushes, and dollarweed thrive where the ground stays saturated; they’re a fair sign the water table is near the surface for long stretches.
  • The low, flat neighborhoods. If you’re on the flats around the city, in Prichard, in Saraland, or in the creek bottoms near Theodore, the odds tilt toward a water-table yard. On the sandy rises of West Mobile or Semmes, they tilt the other way.

None of these is proof on its own — a downspout dumping in a shaded low corner can mimic a few of them — which is why the real answer comes from looking at your grade and soil together, not from a single symptom.

Where Storms Fit In

None of this means storms don’t matter. The Mobile area has seen roughly 38 named tropical systems since 1995 (NWS Mobile, counting the agency’s own list) — more than one a year on average — and a tropical downpour will overwhelm any yard for a while. The city knows it; there’s ongoing public work on the drainage network, from Three Mile Creek restoration to district stormwater projects.

But that public work stops at the right-of-way. Storms are the spike on top of a chronic condition, not the condition itself. A yard that only floods during a hurricane is a different (and rarer) case than one that’s wet every winter. For most homeowners here, the storm is the day it’s most obvious; the water table is why it never really dries out.

What Actually Fixes It

Once you know you’re on a wet-flat lot, the fix is subsurface drainage: a French drain set below the saturated zone to give the shallow groundwater a lower, faster exit, often paired with surface yard drainage for the runoff that rides on top. On an upland lot, the answer is usually grading and downspout work instead — cheaper, and no point installing a water-table fix for a runoff problem.

The one thing worth doing before any of it is a straight diagnosis of which yard you actually have. That’s a look at your grade, your soil, and where water can be sent — and it’s the difference between solving the problem and digging a very expensive trench that changes nothing.
